Top Musicians Feature in New Documentary About Legendary Record Producer Joe Meek

Palm Door Films

Susan Stahman and Howard S. Berger of Palm Door Films are nearing completion on their feature documentary about legendary producer Joe Meek, entitled: ‘A Life In The Death of Joe Meek.

he documentary, a 9-year labor of love, shows how Meek managed to leave an indelible stamp, not just on the music industry, but on modern pop culture as well — due in equal measures to his groudbreaking DIY recording techniques, hit-making philosophy and a life full of social, psychological and sexual obstacles. Co-director Howard S. Berger says “over 40 years after his tragic and mysterious death, Meek has been reborn as an inspirational icon for anyone in search of the Independent Spirit.”

The two filmmakers have already traveled across the UK and the US to interview over 70 friends, family members, colleagues, employees, enthusiasts, critics and biographers of Meek — including rock luminaries Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Steve Howe (Yes, Asia), Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand), Keith Strickland (The B-52’s), Huw Bunford (Super Furry Animals) and Edwyn Collins in addition to members of Meek’s vast stable of artists such as Chas Hodges (Chas ‘n Dave), Big Jim Sullivan, Mike Berry, John Leyton, The Tornados, The Outlaws and The Honeycombs.

Co-director Susan Stahman says “it’s been exactly 50 years since the release of Meek’s biggest hit TELSTAR – the first song by a British pop group to reach #1 on the US charts – and it’s amazing how many new Joe Meek fans we encounter everyday.”

The filmmakers have turned to crowdfunding and social media to complete the documentary. Stahman explains, “Kickstarter is the least cynical business platform for fundraising. It’s people backing your project with trust and emotion. But it’s a ‘do or die’ deal, if we don’t reach our goal by October 16th, the project gets nothing.”
